Save us from bondage, Anambra monarch begs State government

A title Chief from Enugwu-Agidi, Njikoka Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra State, Prince (Dr) Chinedu C. Ikeanyi, has sought the State government intervention to end what he described as years of unrest, violence and intimidation reigning in the community.

Ikeanyi, who is the son of immediate past traditional ruler of the community, late HRH Igwe D.O. Ikeanyi, in an open letter addressed to the State commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy matters, Tonycollins Nwabunwanne, called for suspension of their president general, Hon. Ebuka Onuorah.

According to him, since Onuorah became a caretaker chairman of their town union, Enugwu-Agidi Brotherly Union (EBU) Nigeria to his formal election in 2022 and up till date, the community has witnessed different kinds of violence, protest and counter protests.

He cited the Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting of EBU-NIGERIA scheduled for 26th and 27 September, 2025, which according to him, failed to hold because some delegates were either beaten or prevented from accessing the venue and Onuorah could not save them, thereby prompting the monarch, Igwe Michael Okekeuche and his cabinet chiefs to stage a walkout.

 Ikeanyi also cited some names of their natives killed by thugs, including about 35 pending cases of alleged land grabbing brought against the President General by different people and groups in Enugwu-Agidi, noting that suspending him would provide better opportunities for investigation into the various allegations.

"Thugs attacked some of the delegates from various villages and denied others access to the town Secretariat, the venue of the meeting. At least three delegates ended up in the hospital and many others were disenfranchised and denied entrance to the town’s Secretariat. Our Traditional ruler and members of his Royal Cabinet had no choice but to walkout of the building after their pleas to PG Ebuka Onuorah to allow the delegates inside the Secretariat complex fell on deaf ears," he alleged.

Continuing, Prince Ikeanyi added that some community leaders from ten villages in Enugwu-Agidi had at various protests at Eke Enugwu-Agidi Market Square, passed a Vote of No confidence on the leadership of PG Ebuka Onuorah.

"Our Traditional ruler, Igwe M.C. Okekeuche, has been calling for peace and doing everything within his powers to calm the youths. As a devout Catholic, Igwe Okekeuche does not want to witness any bloodshed which is culturally prohibited by Nri cultural heritage. It is an abomination for an Nri person to shed the blood of a clan’s person. 

"To be forewarned is to be forearmed and that is why I am pleading with you to use your good

office to investigate the looming breakdown of law and order and arrest the situation before it escalates. The least you can do in the current circumstances is to suspend PG Ebuka Onuorah for now because he has lost the confidence of the people and then take your time to investigate the situation of things in Enugwu-Agidi," he added.

He further enjoined the commissioner not to entertain "Some people who identify themselves as Enugwu-Agidi Stakeholders who have called your office several Mmes to intercede on behalf of PG Ebuka Onuorah" because they "DO NOT represent Enugwu-Agidi as a town. They are NOT authorized to speak for Enugwu-Agidi town and do not hold any leadership position both in the traditional and administrative governance of Enugwu-Agidi town."

He vowed to stand form and offer the commissioner with relevant documents his office might need at course of their investigation so as to bring lasting peace in Enugwu-Agidi.

" I do not claim to speak for Enugwu-Agidi town. I am simply inviting you as a concerned citizen of our town to investigate claims I have enumerated above and assess the true picture of things in Enugwu-Agidi and intervene accordingly. By virtue of your office as the Commissioner for LGA, you owe Enugwu-Agidi citizens a duty of care as expected by our governor, Governor Soludo, who is very passionate about the welfare and safety of Anambra people," he noted.
