THE EFFECT OF INTERNATIONAL LAW ON STATE SOVEREIGNTY IN AFRICA: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS

Global change has reordered our lives in all aspects of our existence, the nature and organization of the state and its citizens has also been affected by this change, methods of governance and structures of states across the world has also been altered. Africa has also been affected by these changes.

The state is considered a sovereign entity and the ability of the state to uphold its sovereignty further establishes its power within and outside it. The existence and organization of the international community has also created a scenario where states to although sovereign in entities in themselves, interact and to some extent interfere with the sovereignty of member states.

This paper therefore uses the method of analysis to examine the concept of sovereignty, its content and scope with relation to international law and analyzes the effect which the later has had on the former in Africa to establish the fact that international laws has watered down the sovereignty of states in the international community both in content and practice.
