2025: Group cautions Soludo, Ekwunife, others against hate speeches, spread of disinformation

The Social and Integral Development Centre (SIDEC), a non-governmental organization that promotes democracy, transparency, and inclusive governance, have cautioned the governorship candidates of 16 political parties participating on Anambra State November 8 poll to desist from campaign of calumny.

The speech came at eve of media war by governor Chukwuma Soludo of APGA and Senator Uche Ekwunife (deputy governorship candidate) of the APC, which has led most of their supporters into spreading fake information, pictures and others.

The Executive Director, Ugochi Agalaba-Ehiahuruike, who stated this in a statement, described hate speech, disinformation and fake news as a threat to democratic values and social cohesion, undermining the foundation of a stable society.

"The Social and Integral Development Centre (SIDEC), SIDEC highlights the urgency for all candidates, especially those from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), to refrain from making inflammatory remarks that could escalate tensions in the political environment.

" Promoting unity and understanding among candidates and voters is essential for ensuring a fair and inclusive electoral process. Creating a peaceful electoral environment is a key responsibility for political leaders. We encourage all candidates to focus their campaigns on issues important to voters, such as security concerns, rather than using divisive rhetoric. Hate speech especially damages democratic principles, divides voters, and jeopardizes social stability," it stated.

The Centre further urged all political leaders to embrace respect and cooperation, reminding them that their actions significantly influence the electorate and the health of the democratic process but promoting dialogue and understanding can help create a more positive political discourse that increases voter participation and trust in the electoral system.

"As the gubernatorial election nears, SIDEC remains dedicated to monitoring the political scene and advocating for a campaign environment rooted in tolerance and inclusivity, which are vital for the development of Anambra State. Anambra must once again demonstrate leadership in democratic conduct," it added.
